Foam board
Foam board
Our products are made from Foam board, which is made from a sheet of CFC free polystyrene sandwiched between two sheets of smooth acid free paper to form a strong, lightweight and rigid board with a variety of uses. It is easy to paint or decorate and it can be glued with many different types of glue. Foam board comes in different thickness, typically 3mm and 5mm, and different colors.
Connecting foamboard pieces
Connecting foamboard pieces
Because of Foam board structure, it offers different option by which it can be cut, connected and glued. There are three different ways Foam Board pieces can be connected to each other:
Fold type
Certain sections of top and middle layer of the Foam board are removed and the piece is folded at that point (or glued to edge of another piece) to create a perfect 90 degrees corner.
Notch type
The different Foam board pieces are cut in a way that one piece would fit exactly in the notches that the other piece has in appropriate places. In this case the sides of the connected pieces are shown.
Connector type
The pieces have slots on their sides so that each piece would slide into the slot of the connecting piece.
Removing top and middle layer
Removing top and middle layer
In some models, before gluing pieces of foamboard together some sections of the top and middle layer need to be removed. Use a small screwdriver to do so as shown in the following pictures.
Bend foamboard pieces
Bend foamboard pieces
Although Foam board is rigid, it can be used to create curved surfaces. The way to do that is to cut the top layer of the board and only part of the middle layer, widen the cut by passing something sharp (e.g. tip of a barbeque skewer) along the cut and bend the piece. Making multiple parallel cuts and bends can create curved surfaces (e.g. an airplane wing, or a car wheel).
Fold foamboard pieces
Fold foamboard pieces
It is very easy to fold a foamboard piece to create a perfect seamless 90 degrees angle. You first need to remove the top and middle layer from a section of the piece along the folding line and then fold one part of the piece.
All folding pieces necessary to create a model have an X mark on one side of the folding section of the piece. There are two ways to fold a piece, the correct one is the one where the X mark is hidden after the piece is folded, as shown at the following pictures.
Glue foamboard pieces
Glue foamboard pieces
Foam Board pieces can be glued together using most types of glue. The two most common glues used with Foam Board are:
Hot melt adhesive (HMA), also known as hot glue, is a form of thermoplastic adhesive that is commonly sold as solid cylindrical sticks of various diameters designed to be applied using a hot glue gun.
Hot glue has the advantage of setting quickly, but it is difficult to correct any mistakes. It is recommended for experienced modelers.
Craft glue is a water-based adhesive that can be used for crafting projects such as school art projects, simple fix-its, and hobbies. Craft glues clean up easily with soap and water; many are nontoxic, making them great for kids' crafting projects.
Craft glue takes longer to set, but it allows time to correct mistakes. It is recommended for less experienced modelers and kids.
Tools
Tools
You only need some very simple tools to assemble our models:
- A small knife to detach the pieces from the foam board sheet. Remember to cut the connectors on both sides of the foam board sheet.
- A barbeque skewer to widen a half cut of a piece in order to bend the piece.
- A small screwdriver to remove the top and middle layer of the foam board piece (sections of the piece which need to be removed are shown on the instructions of each model)
- Hot glue or Craft glue to assemble the pieces of the model together.
Decorate your model
Decorate your model
You can use your imagination to decorate your model. You can paint it, use stickers or decals, or anything else you like. For some models we will provide templates which you can use to cut out color papers to cover and decorate you model.
